But what if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead?
Here is a story from Amber Quirin, a college student summer missionary from last summer:
The boy’s name was Daiquan. He first came to VBS with his babysitter on a Wednesday night, the night that we talked about the resurrection. When I told the kids about how Jesus had risen from the dead, Daiquan asked, “But what if He didn’t?” Honestly, the question totally caught me off guard, especially since all my other kids seemed to have a pretty good grasp of the Bible and its teachings. I paused and said, “Well, I guess this would all be kinda pointless then, wouldn’t it?” He asked if I meant VBS, and I said that but also life in general. He took a minute and thoughtfully agreed. That night the verse was Romans 6:23. While the other kids didn’t understand the term “wages of sin,” Daiquan asked me what sin was. He asked questions all night. Some of them were basic, like what is sin, but others were much deeper, like “why do some people worship statues and others worship other things and we worship God?” The next night during our Bible study time, I asked for volunteers to read passages from the Bible for us.
Daiquan raised his hand so I helped him find the passage and let him read it for the class. During the lesson, he asked me if what he had read was true. I told him that everything in the Bible was true and real. On our way to the next section after Bible study, Daiquan told me that he wished that he had a Bible that he could read outside of VBS. The church had already given away its last VBS Bible to another girl in my class, so I made sure that Daiquan would be back the next night and told him I’d bring a Bible for him then.
As soon as I gave him his Bible on Friday night, Daiquan started looking through it. It didn’t matter if we were at worship or missions or whatever; he was reading his new Bible. At one point in the evening, Daiquan looked at me and said, “This book has everything! The apple story (Adam and Eve), the ark…everything!” Then he told me that he had never even seen a Bible before coming to VBS. I showed him how to look up verses in the Bible before he left. It was such a blessing to be the one who got to give him his first Bible—to show him how to find things in it and where to look when he didn’t know what the words meant.
The Missouri Missions Offering helps support student ministries at our college campuses…a vital way to introduce college students to mission endeavors designed to create in them a life-long passion and commitment to missions and ministry as a part of their journey with Christ.
